[ Atlas] eBay invests in niche markets

In 2021, the generalist marketplace acquired a stake in a French player specialising in classic cars parts, strengthening a niche it had already explored.

In 2019, eBay launched Auto Parts Refurb Center, a platform specialising in the distribution of reconditioned parts (21,000 references from 21 car brands). A new diversification in the automotive business: parts for vintage cars. Through its investment in Renovatio (a member of Nexus Automotive International ), which subsequently raised €1.5 million in additional equity, eBay has thus reinforced its position in this niche, in which it has already listed 450,000 available products.

Launched in 2018 with its marketplace bakelit.eu, the French company has set itself the mission of structuring a highly fragmented market that comprises some 13 million vehicles in Europe. Positioned as both a consumer and a trade marketplace, bakelit.eu brings to gether 120 suppliers, offering access to a consolidated catalogue of more than 750,000 parts references, technical information and a list of specialist garages. In March 2021, Renovatio opened a store with 60,000 parts references on the American generalist marketplace (159 million customers, 100 billion dollars of turnover in 2020). The next target is the German market
