To access technical information on Chinese vehicles, the automotive data specialist had to set up a unique system to guarantee data security and confidentiality.

The American giant developed a unique compliance system to convince Chinese manufacturers to give it access to their technical information. “Almost two out of three Chinese cars involved in accidents in Europe will go through the Solera system”, explains Carlos Garcia, Vice President of Global Automotive, responsible for institutional relations with the parts suppliers. “What’s new is that we will be applying a system that guarantees compliance in terms of access to information, but also in terms of data use.” This guarantee is not limited to technical data alone. “We guarantee against any breach of confidentiality of vehicle information. Whether the data is personal or not, we had to provide a guarantee against cyberattacks in particular. We cover more than 92% of Chinese brands present in Europe”, says C. Garcia.

A tailored methodology

The implementation of this system is a revolution for Chinese brands. “We are working closely with Chinese manufacturers because they have never supervised work in this way themselves. Our methodology is new to them; they are not used to having a legal framework that defines the exchange of information”, emphasises the Vice President. This collaboration goes beyond simply providing data. “We give them the means to find out if there is a potential market for them. For example, the residual value of the vehicle, which is very important data. Also, the design aspect: are they designed using giga-casting, is their architecture modular, is their battery repairable?” Solera is making “significant additional efforts to access data on models that are not yet available, as well as new brands that will be arriving soon.” This secure approach extends to American manufacturers returning to Europe. “We are also working to access data on American vehicles such as Cadillac. Our discussions are making good progress and, here again, we must ensure compliance. Our priority is the security of all our customers.
