A plethoric but very competitive independent distribution in the United States

Joe Stephan, vice-president Sales and Business Development North America for Nexus Automotive, talks about an American market where independent aftermarket still has a bright future ahead of it!
What are the characteristics of the parts market in 2023?
Joe Stephan: We are still experiencing supply difficulties but things are gradually returning to order. To compensate for shortages in certain families of parts, many distributors have expanded their sourcing towards alternative manufacturers, in this case other premium brands as well as private label manufacturers from around the globe. Concentration is not complete in North America–transactions continue between Aftermarket players–and consolidation is in full swing! Many players outside Autozone, O’Reilly and GPC are also very present in the region in addition to strong regional and multi-regional distributors like Parts Authority, Fisher Auto Parts, Autowares, and Factory Motor Parts… The objective is clear: to have a very competitive independent distribution, which allows the end customer to have prices adapted to their needs. Especially in this period of inflation. Independent aftermarket still has a bright future ahead of it!
How do you observe the evolution of electric vehicles in the United States?
J. S. : Interest in electric vehicles peaked mid-2022, but there has been a notable slowdown / reduced expectation in demand since this period. Drivers indeed share unsatisfactory feedback on charging infrastructure, especially over long distances. They also encounter battery problems but also premature failures of tires, brakes and chassis! The slowdown in sales leads to an increase in inventory levels in the Dealership network. A situation which forces manufacturers to slow down or even temporarily stop production plans to sell off stocks. In my opinion, technological development is essential for any industry and I am a fervent defender of it! As long as you ultimately have the choice as a consumer, with a vehicle that meets everyone’s needs. Manufacturers’ developments focused on ICE engines that emit even less particles should allow us to have this choice.
Who could cross the ocean to conquer Europe (except GPC)?
J.S.: O’Reilly is the most likely due to its numerous advantages: a robust sales force, a well-rounded portfolio featuring both premium brands and private labels. They certainly have all the elements needed to make the transatlantic leap. Autozone, with its strong and disciplined structure, is also a contender but relies heavily on private labeling, which might face resistance from European workshops and DIY enthusiasts. Other formidable players, especially those in the digital B2C space, might express interest, including FCP Euro, ECS Tuning or RockAuto.
