Outlook: The gradual and localised transition to electric

The sales of electric vehicles are becoming significant in certain countries, with growing acceptance from drivers. But this supposedly disruptive race to electrification is unfolding at varying speeds and levels of integration across different regions of the world. The result is expected to be that most cars on the road in 2030 will be ICE powered. These trends are outlined by Roland Berger and BCG.

Plug-in vehicles, which include battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV), accounted for 13% of the global production of light vehicles in 2022: a 5% increase on the previous year, while the production of ICE vehicles dropped by 5%. Worldwide, the sales of plug-in vehicles increased by 3.5 million units to reach 10 million in 2022, with a target of 14 million for 2023. (source : Boston Consulting Group – 2023 Study)
